Armchair Voyaging

Posted by cmgaylard on February 26, 2021 at 9:15 AM

If you love colour, words, flora & fauna and history then this small book IS the perfect armchair voyage during lockdown. Werner’s Nomenclatures of Colours: ‘The book Charles Darwin used to describe colours in nature on his voyage on the HMS Beagle’. Some greens to inspire and encourage the spring. Published by the Natural History Museum.

Marginalia

Posted by cmgaylard on February 26, 2021 at 9:15 AM

Hearts & Bones Marginalia glass rings: a cycle of love, loss and new life sculpted entirely in the flame. The medieval marginalia I’m looking at resonates with the imagery of tarot cards and the current prevalence of tiny, icon-like tattoos - tattoos also serving as memorials. Marginalia having connotations of being ‘marginalised’ and on ...

Spring Ring

Posted by cmgaylard on February 26, 2021 at 9:10 AM

Spring ring triptych in glass - the trailing foliage of medieval marginalia with the blue sky and deep, clear waters of a spring day. If you would like to see my process AND support an important cause, I will be delivering a Zoom Masterclass for the breast cancer support charity Art for Cure in March. Booking details on their website.

Spring

Some sharp, spring colour on the edge of town this week.

Florals

Posted by cmgaylard on February 21, 2021 at 10:10 AM

Yesterday’s bee rescue prompted me to dig this experiment out. A very early attempt at a bee is hovering just above the murrini flower. SPEAKING of flowers... I’m doing a Zoom Masterclass as part of the upcoming BLOOM event by the Suffolk breast cancer support charity Art for Cure I will spend an hour making a botanical glass ring in the flame - shari...

Winter Beauty

Posted by cmgaylard on February 18, 2021 at 10:05 AM

Evergreen trefoil, glass ring, love-token, life-token, based on the medieval marginalia of illuminated manuscripts. 23.5k gold leaf applied in the flame - the trick is not to burn it all off.... this deep and mysterious blue really glows in the light. Trailing Winter Beauty Clematis plant from the garden - until recently submerged in snow.

Bloom!

Posted by cmgaylard on February 17, 2021 at 7:45 AM

Taking a step away from the medieval to say that I will be delivering one of the Zoom Masterclasses for the Art for Cure BLOOM event this March. During an hour online I will create a sculpted, botanical, glass ring at the torch, demonstrating and discussing my process for a wonderful cause. This class would suit anyone with love of glass, a curiosity about lampwork and a passion for jewellery & wearableart. The class...

Greenery

Verdant glass rings based on the foliage details of medieval marginalia. Sculpted entirely in the flame.

Valentines

Posted by cmgaylard on February 17, 2021 at 7:40 AM

Autocorrect is not happy with: Storge, Philia, Eros & Agape so I’m throwing in Amour-propre for good measure! All the loves for Valentines Day, glass rings based on marginalia and the cycle of life.

Year of the Ox

Posted by cmgaylard on February 17, 2021 at 7:35 AM

Happy Year of the Metal Ox! Small things from Asia in lieu of the drums, lion dancers and firecrackers less common in rural Suffolk.

Snowflakes

Posted by cmgaylard on February 17, 2021 at 7:35 AM

SNOWFLAKES! Making these rings I thought about all the teenagers and young adults I know. Our kids and those in the extended family, their friends, those that find my work and make contact on social media. I’m making this a pre-Valentine post in praise of Snowflakes: complex, unique, individual, fragile yet tenacious in adverse conditions, remarkable!

Snowdrops

Posted by cmgaylard on February 17, 2021 at 7:25 AM

A perfect example of fragility and resilience, a snowdrop Marginalia glass ring, inspired by illuminated manuscripts, sculpted entirely in the flame.

Snow Play

Snow play glass ring: snowfall, snowflakes, frost and thaw.

Snow

Posted by cmgaylard on February 10, 2021 at 4:10 PM

Everything is looking better with snow: the bench came back with us from Thailand and three legs are propped up on bricks, I was given the (rusty) armillary from friends who didn’t want it - who wouldn’t want an armillary?

February

Posted by cmgaylard on February 10, 2021 at 4:10 PM

A detail of ‘February’ from my copy of Les Tres Riches Heures, and suddenly apt. Working in front of the flame and next to a kiln is a pragmatic choice in an old house.

Foliage

Posted by cmgaylard on February 10, 2021 at 4:10 PM

A little trail of foliage on deep and luminous blue, Marginalia glass ring sculpted in the flame.

Snowdrops

Valiant snowdrops, I hope they survive this weekend's weather predictions!

Medicinal Colour

Posted by cmgaylard on February 6, 2021 at 8:55 AM

It’s a bleak day so some jewel-like colours are in order. I’m moving happily between the glow of sunsets and that of illuminated manuscripts for inspiration.
